Mike Christian founds Risk Strategies to provide risk management advice to upper middle market commercial clients with a focus on private equity and healthcare and an emphasis on specialization, technical expertise, practical alternative risk financing programs.
Expands into insurance brokerage, providing specialized coverages and alternative risk financing programs. Client retention rate is above 95%. Becomes one of the fastest-growing brokerage firms in Massachusetts. By the end of 2006, firm is licensed in 48 states, has over 2,000 clients and $140 million-plus in premiums placed.
Risk Strategies Foundation is formed in 2007 by company employees. A minority investment from WR Berkley Capital enables push into new practice areas and product categories, as well as a strategic expansion into Midwest and California markets. In effort to build out specialty practices, firm ramps up its strategic acquisitions.
With 10 offices, 120 employees, and $40 million in revenues, company receives a significant investment from private equity firm Kohlberg & Company, L.L.C. to expand into new markets, add products, and create distinctive brokerage platform with national-scale, specialty focus and meaningful resources. Firm builds reputation for solving complex risk and insurance issues through collaborative, client-centric approach.
Focused on fast-growing specialty market, acquires well-known Entertainment and Fine Art specialist DeWitt Stern Group in 2014. Revenue and headcount near $100 million and 400, respectively. Firm enters Top 35 brokers nationally. Leading private equity insurance sector investor Kelso & Company, acquires Kohlberg & Company’s majority stake in 2015 to accelerate strategic M&A activities while bolstering innovative risk solutions. Teams of service/production professionals, client resources added in several specialty practices.
20th year in business. Launches “Careers in Insurance” internship program to attract next generation of specialists. Named Business Insurance Magazine Best Places to Work in Insurance 2018, 2019 & 2020. Enters Top 10 privately held US insurance brokers in 2019. With 167% three-year revenue growth, debuts on Inc. Magazine’s Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing private companies in 2021.

A native of California, Mike Christian attended the University of California at Santa Barbara and currently holds CPCU, CLU and ARM designations. With over 30 years of industry experience, Mike started the company in 1997. Before founding Risk Strategies, Mike served in senior positions at Alexander & Alexander and Jardine Insurance Brokers. He provides overall strategy and leadership for Risk Strategies.
John Mina joined Risk Strategies to guide an innovative, growing firm into a new era. His deep industry experience and energetic leadership are fueled by 25+ years at Willis Towers Watson and Marsh. As part of his commitment to community involvement John holds board positions with The Friends of the National Zoo and the Maguire Academy of Risk & Insurance Management at Gallaudet University. John holds overall responsibility for day to day operations of the company.
Serving as Risk Strategies’ CFO since 2005, John is responsible for the firm’s accounting, finance, treasury and M&A activities. Before joining Risk Strategies, he held finance-related roles at Endius, Inc., Benchmark Assisted Living, and Haemonetics Corporation. John holds a BS from Bentley University and an MBA from the McCallum Graduate School of Business at Bentley University.
Janis joined Risk Strategies in 2015 to drive our people strategy and maintain our unwavering commitment to our employees. Leading our HR function, Janis focuses on driving organizational results in a performance culture while promoting employee care and professional development. Never a stranger to change and a fast pace, her expertise has been built over 20 years in HR in financial services.
Natalie joined Risk Strategies in 2019. In her role as Chief Legal Officer, she oversees the company’s legal team and is responsible for all aspects of Risk Strategies’ legal affairs including corporate, M&A, litigation and compliance matters. Prior to joining Risk Strategies, Natalie was a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in San Francisco specializing in corporate M&A and securities matters. Natalie holds a J.D. from Boston University School of Law.
Bob works with leaders across all business units to drive collaboration and opportunities that benefit clients while helping to meet the firm’s growth goals. Previously, Bob built two national specialty insurance brokerage firms. The first company sold to Aon where he ran a national practice. His second firm merged with Risk Strategies in 2015. Bob's client experience across his industry career includes public agencies, publicly traded companies, privately held firms, purchasing groups, nonprofit companies, and health care organizations.
