Written by Risk Strategies Claims & Safety | Jan 28, 2022 3:05:00 PM

Winter Storm (WS) Kenan is forecasted to impact much of the East Coast of the United States late Friday through Saturday. WS Kenan will bring significant snowfall potential, strong winds and even coastal flooding to the area. Power outages, downed trees and power lines, slippery road conditions are all potential hazards from this storm and should be taken seriously.

Blizzard conditions are anticipated with potential for wind gusts up to 70 mph and snowfall rates of as much as 2-3 inches an hour at the storm's peak in many areas.

If you or one of your facilities is in the path of this storm, the following steps are recommended in preparation for this storm:

  • Monitor local weather forecasts for updates on the storm’s progression.

  • Clean roof drains, gutters, downspouts, and storm drains of debris, leaves, etc.

  • If you have an emergency generator, test it and check fuel levels. If low, top-up the tank.

    • Always operate portable generators outdoors.

  • if you have a snow blower, test it and check the fuel levels. Fill if low.

  • For locations on the Southern New England coast, be prepared for increased tidal activity and potential water intrusion into your building.

  • Monitor indoor temperatures, especially where water piping is located, to ensure the temperatures stay above 40°F to prevent frozen pipes.

  • Keep outside hydrants and water valves accessible in the event of emergency.

  • For businesses without a generator, shutdown any electronic equipment that could be adversely affected by a sudden power outage.

  • If power is lost, do not re-energize equipment until the utility company indicates it is safe to do so.

  • If electronics have been affected by water, do not re-energize until they have been dried out and inspected by a qualified contractor.

  • Charge any electronics and keep a supply of batteries on hand.

  • Use battery powered or crank flashlights for lighting. DO NOT use candles.

  • Keep vents clear of any snow build-up.

  • Clear a path for any oil, diesel or propane fill deliveries that may be needed.
